A novel name (Benedict was NOT) always invites speculation.

If one reads the history of his reported namesake (Francis of ASSISI), the choice should suggest a radical departure from status quo. OK?

Francis was a rich kid who gave up his patrimony, to the point that he exchanged his clothes and possessions for only a rough robe, sandals and a bindlestiff. He took a vow of poverty.

Francis started an order that was apparently different than any other. He went to the Pope to ask for permission, and was rejected time and again.

Francis established the custom of the Christmas Manger Scene (Little statues that people revere during the time before Xmas. The baby Jesus statue is placed on Xmas Day).

Francis visited the Egyptian Sultan to convert him in order to resolve the conflict of the Crusades.

Francis underwent the stigmata, said to be a sign of Christ's passion.

Francis was a saint 2 years after his death in 1226 CE.

Uh oh. But this feller is a Social Conservative. He is friendly with Communion and Liberation, not to be confused with Liberation Theology.

And Cardinal Dolan said this morning: "He's got the mind of a Benedict and the heart of a John Paul."

    Hoo boy.

    Ugh. --UB.

"Daddy, every time a bell rings, a Libertarian picks up his Pan Am tickets for the Libertarian Paradise of East Somalia!"
