either did not read, or did not understand what he was repeatedly told in the comments. It wasn't that we thought it was bogus. Keep in mind he was posting the smudged videos, not the clear ones. There were many comments that they looked and sounded viable, the caution was not so much the slim chance they might be bogus, but that good journalism always checks the sources. Trust but verify.

If you read Corn's follow up article on Prouty coming forward, he goes through the final stage of convincing Scott he had to give his real name. And what Corn found out about Scott in verifying his identity. Years ago he was working near a canal in FL when a car went off the road and submerged in it. He got a pocket knife from another employee, dove in, cut the unresponsive woman out of her seat belt, got her to coworkers on the shore, who were able to revive her, and immediately went back to the car several times to be sure there had been no child in the car seat.

I know Kos was upset about what happened, however he does not allow some discussions to protect the site integrity and the members from flame wars. The situation was unique in that Prouty was posting the clips in separate diaries, in rapid succession. He paid very little attention to the comments asking him to stop, to provide verification. He kept making a brief comment that he was in contact with Corn. Trying to get his attention with HRs didn't work, again because he apparently had not taken the time to learn the DKos system. Especially to stick with a diary and engage in the comments.  Since no admin was around to get involved, the autoban kicked in and he was bogo, which was not the intent of those commenting.

The concern for me was also that the truth of the videos would be very important in the race, so it needed to be very well vetted when it came out for max impact and minimum distraction from the RW media.

Prouty has integrity and courage I greatly admire. He certainly had the intelligence to understand how important what he had would be and that revealing his identity would detract. He also was able to chase down the information on the internet on the Chinese factory, identify Corn as an ideal journalist for the scoop, and Carter as his contact person.

As many times as he listened or remembered Romney's opening remarks, he didn't verbalize what was really going on. It was typical Romney humor, unaware or uncaring of the insult to the wait staff (or thinking that the guests would appreciate the cut) and an utterly stupid punch line "But Hillary has to eat her beets." Only in GOP deranged thinking would Hillary have paid $50 K and wasted her time to listen to Mitt's drivel. Anymore than he would have wanted her to.

Sorry some of us were trying to maintain the integrity of the site. At the time and even now I think it was appropriate. The story came out strong, the RW could not diffuse the effect, it gained ground very steadily, with a distinct change in the direction of the campaign.

PCCC thank you card for Ed Schultz
I think DKos should do one for Prouty with the petition program.

and understand the feelings of journalistic integrity. However despite the plummeting integrity of main stream and right-wing journalism, there is no way a site with approx 3/4 million sign up members all of whom can post comments and diaries after a brief waiting period would ever be expected to maintain the highest levels of journalistic integrity.

Individual diaries perhaps would be along the line where the integrity would be closer matched to a "Letter to the Editor" in the editorial columns of a paper...

Withholding a Rec or, writing a comment questioning the validity of the content would perhaps have been the right thing to do.

I'm relatively new here, and at the time the diaries were published was merely a lurker visiting on links e-mailed to me by my brother. I am however not a newcomer to internet forums having participated in many established ones, participated in starting up a few, and serving as admin on a few, in addition to presently owning one. Each Forum has it's own idiosyncrasies and newcomers are often confused about how things work when they join. Tell you the truth I'm still figuring my way around here despite being fluent in V-Bulletin, Pun BB, BuddyPress, BBPress, phpBB. It's a whole new place for me, and a whole new way of doing things...

When I first saw the "Teaser Clips" of the 47% video there was little doubt in my mind that they were indeed authentic, and I couldn't wait to see the full release. Yes, these were exactly what we knew and expected Mittens to be like, but it was amazing that he would throw that much poop into the air, and walk under it at the same time. His arrogance was what truly surprised me.

I could fully understand the source of the video taking great lengths to conceal his/her identity as things like this can be very dangerous on the Wild Wild Web in many ways, having had more than one person threaten to show up at my doorstep or, workplace over a forum banning. Nevermind a damning video of a multimillionaire presidential candidate...

The frontpaging of the story with full credibility can always come later, once the rest of the story becomes apparent. I.E. the user becomes trusted, and the video is checked for tampering. In this case we missed the "Big Story."

with this story. I'd hoped someone who knew about what had happened--because we are widely reading and seeing in the press that we didn't listen or believe him--would write a diary about it.

It could be a chance also, perhaps in the comments, for us to thank Prouty.

As a Kossack who wasn't involved I"d like to see this in a diary. Your comment above is very helpful to me, it makes sense.

      •  One more item for context (0+ / 0-)

The numerous bot-IDs that had been signing up.  Lots and lots of new IDs, all with numbers as part of their handle.  When this diarist was posting diary after diary with nothing but short YouTube clips, and ignoring comments asking that he delete them and post all the clips in one diary (because posting lots of them pushed lots of other diaries off the Recent Diaries List), some of us were concerned this would be a way to muck with the site.  All those bot-IDs could be engaged at once to start posting 50 diaries and hour and wham! Site unusable.

There was a LOT going on in the context of why the original clips were not accepted.
