    You sound like you are handling the situation perfectly and with grace.

    I am a Yankee transplant down here in NC, but I live in progressive Chapel Hill, which hardly counts as the South according to its (mostly transplanted) inhabitants.  

    The situation you describe happens often in other parts of NC.  I'm sure it also happens in the Southern tier of New York State, and in part of the North Country of New York State too.

    I'm starting to believe that in some ways the old South is becoming at least as much a state of mind as it is a geographical region.

      I saw the same sort of mindset in Upstate NY when I lived there, minus the twang.  Most of the Christian fundamentalists that I know really are decent people who do a lot of good, and when they are racist, it's probably because Daddy was, and they don't think things through for themselves.

      And yes, you're right.  It's sad and amusing at the same time.
