Laura Clawson and Ezra Klein are all Lost in the Supermarket on this one.  The Washington Post had it right, as did another commenter here who posted that the cancellation of White House tours is childish and petty.

First, the White House is the most symbolic icon of American government...even more so than the American flag, as that is where the country's leader resides and executes his sworn duty to uphold and defend the Constitution.

Second, the White House serves as more than an obligatory tourist stop on the check-off list for middle class vacationers.  Middle school students from a vast region make annual pilgrimages during this very time of year to visit the seat of their government, only to find a "We'll be back - not sure when" sign posted on the White House gates.  How more arrogant and disrespectful message can this administration send to the nation's youth who have sold chocolate bars and raffle tickets to pay their way to Washington?

Third, putting aside for a moment,  the tactics of the source of the offer, Donald Trump offered to underwrite the approximate $78K monthly cost of the tours until the sequester crisis is resolved.  The president rejected the offer out-of-hand because opening the White House back-up clearly runs contrary to his goal to keep the pissing contest with the Republicans at full speed.

"The highest patriotism is not a blind acceptance of official policy, but a love of one's country deep enough to call her to a higher plain." --George McGovern

Call it like it is. Not being blinded by partisanship. The WH bet wrong period. Now they'll need to walk this one back too. I really wish I knew who was calling the shots at the WH.  Amateur hour.
