    The essence of a PhD is developing the skills to perform research. Research can take many forms, including replicative studies, studies that prove facts, studies that prove facts are wrong, studies that confirm facts, studies that add to the body of literature about facts, studies that contradict facts...

    It's not about "just" finding new facts, and the insistence on "this guy" finding "something new" reflects misconceptions about research, about published studies, and academia in general.

      The purpose of a Masters is to find out if a person can do research, while the PhD is about doing the research.

      But what do I know? I'm also a proud grad school dropout.
