  •  Maybe it's the various things we've read about (4+ / 0-)

here that aren't necessarily that there's something that handicaps their empathy, but that their longing for authoritarians to tell them what to think, believe and how to act is just that much stronger and it's only in the absence of the authoritarian that other actions are allowed to be considered?

I dunno.  I'm not a behavioral specialist.  Just bewildered at how people can hate and delight in making other peoples' lives miserable when it doesn't cost them a damn thing.

The vast majority of people are taught to be empathetic at least in word, but the example they're given is just to stick to your own kind. When I hear people say "charity begins at home" - and I think that statement is true in and of itself - it sounds to me that they often mean that charity should start, and end, at home.

This can be a catalyst for a deeper discussion and maybe we can dive into this further here, and when we see each other in a few weeks.

I think greed has finally become not just an accepted modus operandi, but it's now celebrated as a desirable characteristic.  When the greedy can not just accumulate for themselves, but take from those less powerful than they are, I think somehow they feel they get bonus points.

Maybe someone will discover some food additive, like red dye #11, causes this asocial behavior and it will be able to be banned, and then the country can slowly make its way back to a place where the common good is the goal, not the butt of jokes.
