so Portman gets where Cheney has been for years

when it hits one's own family -  unless you are Alan Keyes throwing his daughter out b/c she came out as gay - it reshapes your perception

what the likes of Portman and Cheney seem to miss having empathy for those affected by a policy that does not directly touch them, because if they did they would have far different opinions on economic issues as well

I know that I have trouble changing my belief systems on a dime.  It doesn't surprise me to learn that others have the same difficulty.

It took me years and more reading up than I care to remember to accept that we were causing a significant portion of global warming and that it is a serious problem for the people on this planet.  I'm still trying to figure out the appropriate range of responses.

It's easy for me to believe that the mind will take more time to re-examine one's  political positions than it takes the heart to embrace one's child and say 'It doesn't make any difference.  I love you. I always will."
