What's left of the overwhelmingly white formerly secure middle class have been sold, once again, the scam that they can protect their own lifestyles at the expense of the lower 25% of society. Because, let's face it, welfare queens driving Cadillacs are why gas prices are so high and where the Clinton surplus went.

This combined with the 2 Senators per state regardless of population and the current gerrymander insures that paying down the Bush heist will fall predominantly on the urban blue states. All they have to do is downplay social issues [check] and start making some populist noises about TBTF and Wall St [check] and the centrist Democrats are left with very little and squander that fighting an endless press conference war about assault rifles.

So for all the whining about how Obama should fightfightfight remember the demographics are permanently against any progressive movement at a Federal level. The Republicans can continue to successfully sell "the poor are the enemy of the middle class" barring a new way forward from the center left.

Not that I find it all doom and gloom as of today. I think we'll get a modest infrastructure project but the eventual grand bargain, late this year, will include some easily avoidable tax reform at the top and a further destabilization of all poverty programs and retirement safety net programs. And the economy will be booming on paper for the older white people with small stock portfolios.

We no longer have an ideology. We have a litany of complaints, good ideas and fuzzy nostalgic images of a Great Society beaten down by Reagan and his cult. While we were triangulating and playing defense and chasing gun control they managed to equate FDR with Mao. So we drew some battles and are losing the war.

If you didn't like the news today, go out and make some of your own.
