      democracy & republic being different dimensions. As I pointed out in the diary, the concept of democracy was of great importance to the writers of the Constitution, just not of sufficient importance that they allowed any issue whatsoever to be decided by a democracy encompassing all Americans. But even in the original version, the Constitution established a number of democracies of the elected, and even, within single congressional districts, pure democracies of the People with the limited purpose of electing their representative.
