And the bastards gave him the Nobel for the idea he himself despised!!

    •  Well, I'm reminded of the Aesop fable (2+ / 0-)

where all the animals are bragging about how large their litters are, and they note that the lioness had only one in her litter.  Her response to them was "but that one is a lion."

Einstein's 5 ideas of 1905 were all lions.  Even the best modern scientist would give his or her eyeteeth to have just one of those kind of ideas in a career.

I think it's safe to say that Einstein never abandoned his theory of the photon;  after all, it worked, to the consternation of many!  However, he was dismayed by and critical of the theories that others built upon his work.  It was really the papers of Schrodinger on the wave equation, published in 1927, that caused him to turn against the form that quantum theory had taken.  His complaint was that the theory was "incomplete," due to its inability to allow all information about quantum particles to be known, and certain other apparent absurdities.  He hoped that another theory could supplant the one that had gained prominence, but that has yet to happen.  Again, it still works.
