    At least I thought they'd take anyone who wasn't a hardcore fascist. I mean, if they thought you were a moderate, how could they ever trust you?

    One of the major differences between Democrats and Republicans is that the former have the moral imagination to see the moral dimension of financial affairs, while the latter do not. Some pragmatists are exceptions.

      Totalitarian regimes demand uniformity, not just conformity.

      Recall the scene in Orwell's 1984 where Winston Smith, under torture, offers to say whatever O'Brian wanted him to say. O'Brian replied that it wasn't enough to say it. He had to actually believe it.

      Or as the Italian Fascists put it:

      Believe!
      Obey!
      Work!

      Nothing human is alien to me.
