  •  Synopsis of Esty's remarks - she's at ~12 minutes (4+ / 0-)

Re Esty makes the argument that just like collective action was taken after the church bombings in Birmingham, AL, that Newtown, CT will initiate collective action on gun safety.

The comparison she makes is that children were slaughtered in a place where they should have been safe. After Birmingham action was taken against racial violence.  In Newtown, children were slaughtered in school, where they should have been safe, and action will now commence to really address gun violence.

Rachel sets up the segment with our history of national gun violence trauma and what levels of trauma prompt us to enact legislation. JFK tried (unsuccessfully) when he was a Senator to introduce gun safety legislation. She points out that JFK's assassination in '63 was not sufficient national trauma to bring about gun reform. It took two more high profile assassinations (Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr.) and a number of years before any reform could be enacted.
