My two nieces are typical of the under-30 Southern Republican group.  Their high schools were integrated--but self-segregated for the most part in that whites hung with whites, etc.  ANd they are SOOOOO proud of their Southern heritage (which mostly involves being typical poor white dirt farmers; their great-grandparents only got electricity in the 50s and an indoor toilet in the early 60s--they were lovely people, kind and decent, but poor as church mice). Seen The Help? The younger one is Hilly, the older her sycophant.

I wish they weren't typical, but they are. Granted not everyone is like that--I have lovely neighbors, Balck and white, but sadly my nieces speak for a large portion of their demographic.

in a more northern clime doesn't let me see those young people.  The kids I taught were not always so kind as a group but individually, they'd do anything for anyone. That young woman in the front row reminded me a lot of those kids.  She smiled and giggled with the young man next to her, but totally lost it when that guy started in on "food and shelter."

and spent most of my life there--except for 16 years down here in NO GA, NO FL and 7 years on a base in Japan.  Two very different  mindsets.  There's a lack of curiosity down here--most college grads want to spread their wings but my nieces can't see any reason to try some place new. Kinda scary, that lack of curiosity.

        •  I cannot imagine how dull life (0+ / 0-)

would be without curiosity!  I've never relocated, but I'm always looking to learn and experience new things.

I was just telling someone last night that the internet had been invented for me.  I can find anything and everything I want, and I often stumble upon totally unrelated stuff along the way.  It's like the best gift ever to find something I wasn't looking for.  :-)
