    In any case, this is why 401ks, as flawed as they are, can make more sense. Or an independently managed pension fund.

    It makes no sense in today's world for anyone to rely on their employer's solvency for both their paycheck and their retirement. Retirements should never be reliant on ongoing payments from potentially bankrupt institutions.

    Unions today should be looking into ways to get the company to give them the net present value of the pensions today, then let an independent organization manage them. How many times do these scenarios have to happen before someone eventually gets a clue?
