  •  I'm disturbed and appalled that GOP "leaders"... (15+ / 0-)

have not made any attempt to denounce the open and over racism in their Party.  Even more disturbing is the open and overt racism unashamedly displayed time and time again by the "leaders" of the republican party.

Not only do they allow people attending their political conventions to make unchallenged public racist statements, republican "leaders" make the same types of (more obscurely worded) racist statements from the podium.

Is it because when economic downturns persist, racism and xenophobia flourish?  Is it because the republicans have no shame--and obviously no fear of repercussions?

It's hard to say, but whatever the root cause(s) it is totally irresponsible, immoral, and ugly for top republican "leaders" to ignore and/or display their own racism.

    •  It is like the GOP leaders do not want to offend (6+ / 0-)

and lose the racist base of voters. They need to show some courage and confront and denounce. I hold little hope they will confront racists as they are afraid of losing their base and afraid of being primaried by a racist.

      •  It's twofold... (4+ / 0-)

        Or possibly even threefold.

Admitting they have this problem within the party could turn away potential young voters who don't want to associate with racists.

At the same time admitting the problem will offend the large number of Republicans who don't THINK they're racist (even if they are). And this is the bulk of the party.

And of course even if it's a comparatively minor element they don't actually want to chase out the total bigots because they still rely on them.

So they just play dumb about the whole thing and hope it will all sort itself out.
