I find in news reports that when a bust occurs and drugs are involved, media most often mentions marijuana more than the other drugs. They never concentrate on Oxycontin trafficking, or meth, or the more dangerous stuff. By mentioning marijuana more frequently, they continue the meme of it being a "gateway drug" and make it sound as bad as everything else, which we know it isn't.
The media also loves to show busts of marijuana - bales of the stuff found, or pounds found, "street value", blah, blah, blah.
You never get them questioning spending so much money going after drugs that are more benign, like dope. They lump it all together and make dope as bad as meth and everything else.
Maybe coverage is different in the northeast from where you are. But I'm tired of marijuana being touted as dangerous.
It's a hell of a lot less dangerous than a cop wannabe on steroids!

but for several years I did news for a pro-marijuana website and sifted through tens of thousands of news items , posted thousands, and during that time noticed and frequently commented upon a general tendency was to limit reference to 'marijuana' and keep it on 'drugs'.

The guiding issue has been one of trying to suffocate the 'hard drug-soft drug' distinction that clearly exists and, I think, the reinforce public support for the drug war.  "Every bust means we are winning!" sort of Stalin-esque.

AND....I live in a very backwards area versus many who live out west where attitudes are genuinely more evolved.

I would hope marijuana would be reported accurately because that would hasten the arrival of sanity.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.
