    for Conroy, I'll note that unlike Johnson, Conroy didn't reach the top by marrying someone wealthy. In his previous turn as a CEO, he did a pretty good job at turning around a company that had just failed in its second major attempt at transforming its central chunk of intellectual property into a working business model.

    Sure, I think he was overpaid -- I think they're all overpaid -- but he isn't a complete idiot like Johnson. His success wasn't just a fluke -- he had apparently impressed the board in his previous role at the company (interestingly, I think he was on the legal staff, not the sales/marketing group), and when they chucked the CEO and executive team, they asked Conroy to take over.

    I too have my reservations about electing CEOs, but about the only similarity you could find between Conroy and Johnson is that they've both been CEOs.

    To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
