Simply look at all of the hate directed at Barack Obama for being President While Black.  Now, go back 40 years, 40 EFFIN YEARS!, and imaging Coleman A Young becoming the first black mayor of detroit.  The white leadership has never forgiven detroit for this.  That is all you need to know about the EFM laws and the urban/suburban politics around places like detroit... Displaced white oligarchs vowing to either get theirs back or destroy it.

    •  There is some truth in that. n.t (0+ / 0-)

What we need is a Democrat in the White House.

And the EM is just a sham, because Detroit is doing so well on its own?  I don't recall the suburban voters electing Kwame Kilpatrick, or the city council who made decisions that affect Detroit's finances to this day.

I really don't get it.  I mean, I understand that you think that the Detroit City Council and Mayor should be able to try to solve Detroit's problems on their own, but you ignore that Detroit HASN'T had that ability for the last several hundred years.

What are the parameters of your argument? Let's understand that Detroit is not a sovereign entity.  It's a municipal corporation of the State of Michigan.   Is the position that once a city is incorporated, that the state can NEVER do anything to affect the city, no matter what?    Would it be ok if the state were majority African-American, or the city was majority white?  Would it be ok if Jennifer Granholm had done this instead?

      •  typo: Detroit HAS had that ability (0+ / 0-)

It's been running itself for a long time.

abandoned.  No rocket science there.  But abandonment isn't enough, or white suburbanites wouldn't give a damn about kwame because he is someone elses problem.  But they do give a damn, they obsess over it and blame all their own problems on it and smugly wait for a great-white-hope to re-establish rule (that would be the EFM).

And it isn't just detroit that is dependent upon the auto-industry, but also the lilly-white suburbs and most of southeast michigan.  (In fact, probably more so given how so few plants remain in the city.)  So you really can't blame the auto industry.

"The parameter of my argument" is simple - the EFM is simply part of a continuity of aggression towards detroit by financial elites in self-exile and dumb white suburbanites that dont know whose battle they are fighting or that they are next:  Detroit has a $1.2B school budget that Snyder's patrons want, and when they get that they will move onto the suburbs.

So,what are your parameters?  It isn't about the $1.2B school budget or the water department or the bus system and police force budget, that instead Snyder is running things like a charity and doing all this out of the goodness of his heart?  That it isn't ALL ABOUT THE MONEY?

    •  sorry. i'm going to have to point to the (0+ / 0-)

race riots in the 60s for causing a giant exodus of white people, and their money, from the city.

That and the fact that detroit is a one-trick-pony. All it knows is the auto industry... well that and arson, but that's a different story.

The city is doomed. I think too many people hold out hope for the city because of memories of a by-gone era when unions were powerful and pay/benefits were better than great. I think that many hold on to detroit for the same reason that conservatives vote to ban gay marriage.

      That reason is the 50s.
"conservatives want to live in the 50s. Liberals want to work in the 50s"

It's time to just let go of Mo-Town. The circumstances that lead to it having a population of over 2Mil are gone. The arsonists are actually largely going the city a favor. They are helping return nature to the land
