    and loud and obnoxious. Might be right that Christie will veer to the loud and obnoxious over the next few years. There will be more schoolteachers to yell at.

      Any time anyone suggests that such-and-such a candidate is too extreme, too loud, too quiet, too whatever to be nominated, much less elected, someone always reminds us that Ronald Reagan was supposed to be unelectable and look what happened. It happens with Democrats occasionally as well (though more often we remember how Clinton's character problems were supposed to sink him), but it's especially common among Republicans.

      But I don't see it working with Christie. Here's why: Reagan said all sorts of heartless, callous, stupid things...but he said them all with a sugary smile. That took the edge off his extremism in the eye of a lot of voters. That isn't going to happen with Christie. And that's even without the matter of his working too closely with Obama after Sandy, which isn't going to be forgiven either. New Jersey is probably stuck with him for another five years, but after that he'll likely fade into obscurity just like NJ's last Republican governor (who, you will recall, was also a darling of the mainstream media).
