can share, especially anything that was important to both him and your family, I'm sure it will be appreciated. Even if you can't make it during shiva, but go another time, it is okay.

Usually a donation of some sort is made, as been mentioned several times above. Or a tree planted in Israel. Or a tree planted somewhere that it is needed.

    •  Thank you, dear heart (4+ / 0-)

The tree planting I never thought about -- and oddly enough it wouldn't be in Israel.  He and his wife loved staying with my parents when they were on the West Coast.  My Mom still has a gorgeous yard with over 100 rosebushes and amazing plantings.  He loved sitting out there with my Dad -- they both called it paradise.  There's a place on the side that lost a tree -- I think my Mom and I could plant one there for him and send a picture, with other pictures and memories to his son.

What an amazing recommendation.  Thanks again, TheFatLadySings.

I messaged you something about peculiar food customs related to Passover including the relevant timing in my household as the holiday approaches. I am rather compulsive about my Passover clean up though I don't know I would be if a parent passed away.

but I really am fascinated by food customs and never find them peculiar.  Since I'm Irish/mongrel -- I often make foods off season or "religious calendar."  I love hamentaschen -- and only this year learned about the history and timing of Purim.  I'm a huge fan of Jewish cooking -- I just need to develop the touch.

This diary is a treasure which I will return to often for advice on consolation, food and life.
