    because that was the lingua franca of Palestine at the time the prayer was added to the liturgy, which meant everyone knew it at a time when Hebrew was only a liturgical language.

    I used to be a cantorial soloist and sunday school music teacher back in the late 80s, which is where I learned this particular factoid from one of the Rabbis I worked with.
