How many of us have sensed this link intuitively, though it can't be quantified?

    •  I've spent about 15 years researching gender (14+ / 0-)

discrimination (not as a professional, just on my own.) The attitudes, beliefs, and personality characteristics of spouse abusers and sex offenders tends to closely mirror those of racists, anti-gay bigots, and those I refer to as "economic exploiters." Based upon some of the research I have seen on racists and anti-gay bigots, there does seem to be a good deal of overlap. I will have to dig up the research papers I have seen on this topic--I am not sure if they are available online.

It is very interesting how so much of the research out there focuses on the number of domestic violence and sexual assault victims there are, but it is extremely difficult to get information about the number of perpetrators there are. Given the extremely high percentage of women and children who have suffered domestic violence and sexual abuse, the number of abusers must be quite high. I find it quite interesting that nobody seems to want to explore this question--just as nobody seems to want to talk about the role fundamentalist, right-wing religion, right-wing social mores, and right-wing economic theory have in perpetuating the culture of abuse in this country. When people (mostly those of us on the left) talk about these things, we are shouted down as being "politically motivated" to smear our opponents.
