Jeers to taking a fall yesterday that left my whole right side hating me.   Ow.  Important safety tip: if you know you have balance problems, do not stand up to put on your underwear.  Your toe will get stuck.   You will fall.

Cheers to temporary insanity.  The garden center guy is coming in an hour (and me still in my nightie) to talk about taking out six blue spruces and a swamp maple, and replacing them with an attractive hedge and a weeping willow.  We can't afford it.  What are we doing??

Cheers to snow.  Jeers that it has to come while the garden center guy is here.

Cheers to spring flowers coming up.

And cheers to all of us, because we rock!

    •  While you're wavering about replacing those trees, (18+ / 0-)

consider either keeping them, or planting other native species. Weeping willows are from China. And the hedge might be an invasive nonnative plant. Be sure to ask.

I don't want to sound like I'm preaching, but every day I see our forests and fields degraded by easy-to-grow plants that have escaped from someone's yard and are now crowding out beneficial native plants. Garden centers are complicit in the problem, because the invasives they sell are so hard to kill that they make every homeowner look like a green thumb. And the garden center rarely has to replace plants that die, 'cause they won't die.

The garden center nearest my house still sells Chinese privet, English ivy, and Asian wisteria. They'd probably special-order kudzu if someone asked for it.

      End of rant

I LIKE silver maple! Yes, I know they sometimes get hollow and fall apart but I still like 'em.
      And blue spruce.. lovely!

Our previous owners apparently thought they'd stay eight feet tall and three feet wide.  Now the biggest one is thirty feet tall and over laps the sidewalk.

And the stupid maple only shades our garden.  Not our house, not our neighbor's house, provides no sound protection.  We hate it.  WE HATE IT.

If you want it, feel free to come and get it, it's about seventy feet.

Oh, Audri, I was so mortified.  My face hurts now, worse when I bend over, so pruning the roses is out.  Mr. escapee never does it - but he gave it a game try yesterday, trimming maybe a foot off five-foot roses.  The garden center guy saw it and gave us an impromptu lecture on proper rose care.

source.  You want something easier to access than your water pipes.

I love weeping willows.  So graceful.  But they do have issues.

      •  He told us (3+ / 0-)

He made it sound like instant death, and said the only real place for one was on the edge of a water source like a pond.  If we do this, we'll try something else.  Or go completely apeshit crazy and put in a poooooooool!
