  •  overlap between religion and culture (4+ / 0-)

No religion is practiced in a vacuum.  Instead, most of the world's religions are rooted in cultures that predate them, because most of the world's religions are practiced by peoples to whom the religion is not native.  The Christianity professed by conservatives is not the platonic version taken right out of the Bible, but something that's been melding with pre-existing secular cultures for two thousand years.

Their Christianity makes perfect sense when you think of it as a thin veneer of ritual and dogmatic sloganeering overlaid on the cultures of pagan Rome or the Germanic tribes.
