  •  I'm not convinced the first word is blank (2+ / 0-)

If you look at the first word of each row, (reading up) you get lengths of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7

I think the first row consists of an 8-letter word and a 9-letter word.

Hopefully ...... soon, Mom. My political compass: - 8.38,-6.97

Nova said the letter between them is not an "O".

"remove salt". I think must be in position 1½.

        •  SPOILER: the extra clue (1+ / 0-)

would have been placed right after clue 14.

The gremlins one-offed my verticals from BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH to BEWARE THE IDEA OF MARCH (by replacing the S of IDES with an A). I thought a better one-off could have been created by adding in an A between the E and the S of IDES: BEWARE THE IDEAS OF MARCH.

The gremlins insisted that IDEA worked fine and that using IDEAS would have spoiled the symmetry of the 1-2-3-4-5-6 rows. And as is usually the case in arguments with gremlins, the gremlins prevailed.

But if they'd let me, I would have added in a clue between 14 and 15, so that the clues for the fourth row would have read:

          10. bent over in England
          11. involve
          12. final part of something, or main part of rush
          13. this is often found below title and author of story
          14. estranged
          14.5. remove salt
That would have led to answers and added letters
          leant       I
          entail      D
          tailend     E
          dateline    A
          alienated   S
