There will be a national non-profit plan available to all when the exchanges are up and running.

If that turns out to be popular, it has the chance of morphing into a variation of the public option.

    •  It's not really non profit (0+ / 0-)

When the money goes to for profit companies.  It amounts to a guaranteed government subsidy for those supposedly private companies.  Once again our government has found a way to privatize profits, while socializing losses.
Not that it won't do a lot of good for some people.  But we could have got a lot more good for a lot more people.  The ACA always was half a sandwich.

Under the Affordable Care Act, at least one of the nationwide plans must be offered by a nonprofit entity. Insurance experts see an obvious candidate for that role: the Government Employees Health Association, a nonprofit group that covers more than 900,000 federal employees, retirees and dependents, making it the second-largest plan for federal workers, after the Blue Cross and Blue Shield program.

        •  Non-profit doesn't mean fair (0+ / 0-)

My state has three non-profit health insurers.  Each charges their insured very high rates, spends members money on advertising, and pays their CEOs over a million dollars a year.  One major non-profit hospital pays their CEO $3 million a year.

Non-profit doesn't mean fair OR low cost.
