        If there is to be government by the people, political parties are an anachronism, unless they find something other than distributing favors to do.
        It's not just Republicans who aren't keen on the people governing.

          People still split into discrete factions based on ideology, without regard to any other political parties they might be involved with. It happens all the time on the local level. People share beliefs with each other, and form organizations with people who share those beliefs in order to coordinate their actions and more effectively translate those beliefs into policy.

      It determines who controls congress, the ultimate law-making body in this country.  Seems important to me.
