      Steubenville Victim's Mother Speaks

“It did not matter what school you went to, what city you lived in, or what sport you’ve played," the victim's mother said. "Human compassion is not taught by a teacher, a coach or a parent.  It is a God-given gift instilled in all of us. You displayed not only a lack of this compassion but a lack of any moral code."
I don't agree with her either although there have been studies that show that empathy is an actual gene : Is empathy in our genes

But, it may not exist in all of us and perhaps not to the same degree. I believe that every human has the capacity for good or evil, but the influences throughout our lives, primarily the people we are surrounded with, will have the greater effect. And I don't think you have to be in actual physical contact. For instance, having Rush Limbaugh on in your office every day could go a long way to screwing up an empathy gene.
