      at any of the 100 (or so) top US research universities.

      Methinks that faculty know that going in, so I'm not going to shed too many tears for them.

      Students might be more naive or uninformed about this, but there are plenty of small liberal art schools of excellent quality (and similar tuition costs, if they wish to be elitist about it) that they can attend.

        But rather for students who end up with 2nd rate teachers who are first rate researchers..

        There are plenty of first rate liberal arts colleges and I strongly encouraged my kids to attend liberal arts colleges and to ignore the temptation of the research universities.  Plenty of time for those schools for job training at the masters level
