..of the timing, mostly. She just left a high-profile office saying her plan was to get some rest; this announcement came pretty quickly, putting her back into the spotlight; it is still a controversial subject to many people (not me...like you...one of my reactions was also that...it's great to see someone else endorsing marriage equality) and announcing a policy position on a controversial subject is usually best done well before the heat of a campaign. It's the timing, mostly, that made me wonder if this was a clear indication of her plans to run.

is reviewing two very high-profile cases regarding gay marriage, and supporters for equality are lining up and voicing their views in hopes of influencing the ruling.  That's why Portman came forward, and that's why Clinton made the video for HRC (which is heavily involved with the cases before the court).

This isn't a "policy position" announcement--what policy did she even mention?

is a policy position to me in that marriage is a government-sanctioned action, with the government even issuing "licenses" for people to be married. To support gay marriage is to support government's licensing of gay marriage...that's what the whole issue is about (anyone can go about marrying themselves or getting married by anyone they want, but it's only considered legal in the eyes of the law if there's a license).

Perhaps you're right...perhaps this was exclusively motivated by a desire by Hillary Clinton to influence the Supreme Court (although it seems highly unlikely to me that any of the Supreme Court justices currently sitting, are going to be influenced just because Hillary Clinton has changed her view on this). But it seemed like a lot more than that to me.
