  •  Yeah, some reality (9+ / 0-)

    Mulcair is spinning a line.

The reason there's problems with new pipelines heading east-west is due primarily to demographics: they'd have to pass through the most populated and developed part of the country to get to refineries and ports in the East which are primarily set up to transfer fuel in from the coast to Central Canada.

The two factors make a pipeline difficult: imagine someone proposing a new large pipeline running from Boston down I-95 to Virginia. The right of ways would be a hugely complicated mess. Same thing up here in Canada for a new line running west to east (or vice versa).

    •  Well, would you want toxic diluted tar (7+ / 0-)

      running through your back yard?

Dilbit is nasty, highly corrosive stuff that's going to leak out somewhere. Leaks are inevitable. It's much harder to clean up than crude oil. That's why I included the details on the dilbit disaster.

look for my eSci diary series Thursday evening.

    •  Both Canadian pipeline expansions will be a fight (0+ / 0-)

I also commented about this above:

In one case they have to go through Native land claims issues and the fact that BC voters and provincial governments are very opposed to it. All risk and no money.

Also difficult in Ontario, all risk and no money. Densely populated with a lot of ridings that are not easy wins for the Conservatives (party of the Tarsands), ridings that they need to maintain their majority. Line 9 also goes through Toronto, and I'm guessing that city will fight it pretty hard too.
