  •  Sometime in the late 80's (26+ / 0-)

She was opening for Taj Mahal in a smallish venue up here in the north country. She tried to get the audience to do some specific singing on a song that I, at least, was not familiar with and had a huge temper tantrum when it did not meet her expectations ! Taj had to come out and help her off stage , trying to comfort her.

It was a bizarre performance and I have always thought she was unstable in some way. At the time she was respected and I'd heard of her, though not a fan, but the folks I was with were glad she would be there and she was well received. We just were too cold, too early in the evening and no one knew the song.  We were really there for Taj Mahal, who always puts on a helluva show and always has lots of enthusiastic audience participation, so we were willing, just not inspired enough for her.

So weird and sad that she has turned out thus.

    •  Similar experience... (12+ / 0-)

...probably late eighties as well.  She was playing a pretty small club with a new band, on what appeared to be a very low-budget tour.  (Just a few years earlier, when she had a major label deal and was on MTV all the time, she was traveling like a rock star.) She seemed a bit preoccupied all night, but did a good show.  She called the last number, "The Secret to a Long Life (is knowing when it's time to go)", and just tore into it like she was trying to see how fast she could finish it.  The song finished, she threw her guitar down and fled to the dressing room, not to be seen again.
I heard from another fan later that someone close to her was dying and that she'd received bad news that day.  I think this was also around the time her marriage was falling apart.  And then she hooked up with that church in L.A. I'm guessing they did a major "love bombing" on her.  And they're probably the only people happy with her today, and she's probably fine with that because "she knows who her friends are".

    •  Same song... (7+ / 0-)

...different verse. I saw her in the mid-90's after the release of "Kind Hearted Woman." She was chatty in the extreme, telling long rambling stories between songs and going off on lengthy tangents about her new philosophy of music to unite the races.

Someone in the back inevitably yelled out "shut up and sing!" She threw an awkward, volatile temper tantrum that I thought would end the show, but somehow did not.

My take then was that she was teetering on the edge of a breakdown of some sort. If she is suffering with some form of mental illness, it's been a long struggle. A real shame. She wrote some great songs and could be a great performer. Hopefully she'll get help AND apologize.
