couples, that dreadful statistic about 51% of adult Americans being spouseless can be adjusted.

Although concern about homeless people hasn't put them in houses, perhaps if we refer to the spouseless, people will get the idea that having a life's partner is good.
The single state is not what it's cracked up to be. And it's definitely inefficient.

We organize governments to deliver services and prevent abuse.

    •  I wouldn't consider that (3+ / 0-)

to be "dreadful" -- unless of course it's just because same-sex couples living together can't be considered as "spouses" because of lack of marriage equality.

But there are plenty of spouseless people who live happy, healthy lives...my mother was widowed at 42 and never remarried, first because she couldn't find anyone to measure up to my Dad, then later because she enjoyed her independence and didn't want to be "saddled with some old fart with health problems" (her words).

I enjoy being married (well, most days), and my greatest fear is something happening to Mr. Scribe...but I think after a period of adjustment I'd be okay just as my mom was.

      •  Not too bad if you have no kids, but...man... (1+ / 0-)

single parenthood is HARD WORK if you care at all about your kids.

It's good to have a partner to carry some load.
Not to mention more grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.

        Otherwise, it's a mixed blessing:

Pretty good for guys, given that married men live longer than single men.
Not so hot for gals, as I believe that married women don't live quite as long as single ones.
