marriage equality becomes more than anecdotal, as now, where select "pro-marriage equality Republicans" are tolerated by the Party in the name of inclusion, even if they're still despised by large numbers of social conservatives.

But when marriage equality starts becoming part of GOTP orthodoxy, in the platform and in the advocacy of most GOTP candidates, it will be interesting to see how the Christian fundamentalist wing reacts. Do they"make a pact with the devil" to stay relevant in the newly sinful and abominable GOTP, or do they flee the GOTP and it's newly found gay tolerance in droves?

The same dynamic is true on a variety of other fronts. If/when the GOTP embraces comprehensive immigration reform they'll attract more Latinos, but what happens to the large number of extreme nativists in their ranks?

If/when they support modest gun control they'll attract more single moms and suburbanites, but what happens to the armed-to-the-teeth 2nd Amendment absolutists already in their ranks?

Fact is, as the GOTP modernizes it's positions to be more in line with this century, they may on the margins attract new members previously repelled by their positions. But their newly minted moderation, adopted simply to avoid demographic electoral extinction, will also alienate big chunks of the most fervent (and extremist) portion of their current base.

These constituency tradeoffs, and there are a lot of them, should be entertaining to watch play out for years to come.

    •  I'd love to see third parties sink them (0+ / 0-)

Look at what happened with Southern Democrats after civil rights. I could see the constitution party or some other vehicle for the dominionists, racists, xenophobes, etc. pulling 10% or more in national elections, as the true believers in bigotry and hatred bail out of the Republican party.
