and it's been four years since I had steady, solid employment in a field where...well, I can engage in the things I am good at.

And yes, the stigma of homelessness is horrific...for example, arguments with my Mom who doesn't understand how someone with a college degree could not have a job and be on the street.

I almost called her something waaaaay out of her name and opted to hang up the phone instead.

People telling me that I should trying to get some kind of disability income if I can't find work...hell, I'm willing to work but I'm reaally no good in labor jobs...I'm an office worker.

And even though I know a few people, once that stigma becomes attached it's asa if you become an untouchable or something.

One of the big reasons that I've decided to do book reviews here at Kos, for example, is a lack of things to do. Sure I could spend 8 hrs. a day, 5-6 days a week looking for a job but with a 4 year gap on the resume, if it ain't biting then it ain't biting.
at least the book reviews (even if I'm not paid for them) I can get a free clip out of them or something.

It just seems as if this really is a society that doesn't give a shit anymore.

with consciences, that is.  Eventually, this thing will reach critical mass and will improve--although it is an eternal battle.  Hope you and your mom can work things out...
