... about it not being something your student should feel ashamed about.

But for me, here is what it comes down to:

there is no reason to hide the fact that it happened
It is her story, it is her fact, and it happened to her.

Talking about it is probably the last element of choice left to her, and she can exercise it any way she chooses.

That's why I had to respect her decision not to report, but it still drives me insane. Her undeniable promise (she is easily among the brightest people I've ever had the privilege to teach--and I've taught in many capacities--in fact, I think she is probably tied for first) was not completely destroyed, but part of it was taken from her. After that she got involved in some things that I will not condemn or demean in any way, but I will say were less than optimum for her skill set. Now, there were other issues going on, so I don't want to oversimplify, but I can't help but feel that I failed her and that I had to fail her if I was going to respect my promise. Moreover the reason she wanted that promise because it is true that some people still regard rape victims as being in the wrong. Somehow. I honestly just cannot get that.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's a bit like being open about being gay. THERE IS NO SHAME and the more we know about it the less stigma there is. But one does have to respect the privacy of the individual (so long as there's no hypocrisy involved--I have no problem with outing closeted gay-bashers, but that's another issue altogether).

Anyway, I guess the point I really want to make is that there is no shame and I think that our obsession with keeping the names of the victims secret undermines that message.
