different. It's not possible to make direct comparisons between even small land locked cities and a port city like New York. And that is part of why I think some improvements in gun safety will have to come at the state and local level.

I'm totally with you re different relative utility/relative risk of firearm ownership. Someone living on 500 ares in Montana has very different needs / risks than someone living in 100 square feet in Brooklyn. Firearm proficiency varies tremendously too.

Here (in NYC) we do have a problem with extra-judicial killings by police. We don't have a problem with suicide by gun. (In part because there are alternatives).

    OTOH - New York City

    17,000 schools
    1.1 million students
    635,000 K-8 students

Last mass shooting? 1910 (with a fully automatic pistol)
The Sullivan Act was passed the following year.

How? We pay higher taxes and let the police handle any problems.

There are a lot of stereotypical fears. But, the fact is, the NYC subway accommodates 8 million riders per day. NYC high school students can apply to high school in any of the 3 boroughs, and the take the subway to school. For all its reputation - New York is much safer in some ways than many other parts of the country, in part because CCP applicants are screened by the police.
