My jr. high school concert band played excerpts of this musical back when it was current, and this was my favorite part of the arrangement.

2 key musical 6th's ("la"), right in the opening after a 3rd, and then the ending note of the mid point of the 1st verse. This is big medicine in my Celtic trad music which I was just discovering at this time.

Damn, over 40 years and I can still hear the way it reverberated in that particular band room.

I was in the band, too, and altho this particular piece
wasn't in our repertoire, I know the feeling you're
        talking about.

[there is something so fantastic that happens
when the instrument that you had previously practiced for
hours on end--alone--is joined with others to produce
harmonies, themes and subthemes, and all the wonderful
dynamics that are a part of that.  esp. when you're that age,
and experience it firsthand.  it is something one never
forgets, and was the catalyst for my life-long love of music.]
