I keep thinking I have a superlative vocabulary--and then run across such a truly lovely word that has been around for years.

I was 18 before I ever noticed the word "moot"-- had the same reaction.   63 years ago and I still remember

Although I cannot remember the first time I heard it.

I do remember the first time I ever paid attention to it (and decided I should figure out what it meant) was when I heard Rick Springfield's song Jesse's Girl.

I'll play along with this charade
That doesn't seem to be a reason to change
You know I feel so dirty when they start talking cute
I wanna tell her that I love but the point is probably moot
      link

And I just include the link for that because the first link I clicked on to get the lyrics gave me this:

I play along with the charade
There doesn't seem to be a reason to change
You know, I feel so dirty when they start talking cute
I wanna tell her that I love her but the point is probably mute
      link

That can't be correct, can it?  I may have to re-evaluate the past 30 years of my life if it is.

      •  Don't know about the wording. (0+ / 0-)

I remember because I was helping a person in the dorm-proofreading a paper for her, and questioned moot.

Actually, I think moot has to be right.   Mute rhymes, but doesn't really make sense.   Probably someone proofing the wording and "fixed" it.
