Well, we have to answer, don't we?

At long last, I think that humans are naturally benign and resort to hostility under stress. I think they are naturally social and empathetic, and they turn sociopathic only when pressed. However, I believe that a horizon of expectations can set a person's parameters, and thus a person who grows up in a capitalist system can expect narcissism and greed, while a person who grows up in a feudal or socialist system can expect sympathy or deferral of the good.

There is a light view left and a dark view left, and there is a light view right and a dark view right.

I intentionally left my discussion incomplete to hope for others to fill in the terms on their own, but the "humans are basically good" left view is socialism/Marxism. Syndicalism and some forms of anarchism (the Krepotkin sorts) are also light. The dark view is what we have seen in the US, but that's because the dark view gets operative, while the light view gets put in by volunteer coops and the like.

The dark view of conservativism is penal and feudal. It is autocratic or dictatorial. The light view is libertarian. For some damned weird reason, folks won't accept any benevolent assumptions about man when it comes to sharing, but they will with regard to libertarian free markets meaning the best. I suspect it is due to a poison in our conversiiton from the start.

    •  What about a Light Coalition? (1+ / 0-)

Unfortunately, it seems lots of the "light right" has been roped into a coalition with the "dark right".  I've always felt that there were plenty of people with whom we could make common cause if we could get through to them, because lots of those people define themselves as "light" first and "right" second.

The '60s were simply an attempt to get the 21st Century started early....Well, what are we waiting for? There's no deadline on a dream!

      •  And the dark left, too (0+ / 0-)

For example, I thought some of the most fruitful discussions came when the conservatives who insisted that man is too barbarous and inclined toward nastiness to trust in systems met with the leftists who (from the New Left) said that man is so bad and flawed that only mediating individual excesses through systems could act as a curb.

I have great faith in people and no faith in people, because I think they want to do good until they feel that the rules are unfair or they are stressed. People are also, though, victims of their own apprehensions and prejudices, and so I don't trust us to find ultimate answers, only temporary ones. That makes me a liberal perforce. Since I think all political solutions are flawed and temporary, there has to be change to simply stay in place. However, I also think that maladjusted individuals can do immense damage, and we need to plan for this and mitigate.

It's too bad, really, that it's unfashionable to even ask whether we think people are basically good or not (or if being born to a race or region can imbue virtue, as the right has come to say).
