    The problem with saying "the past was better" is that even if you're right, that doesn't settle the issue.  

    I might rather live in the '70s (or even parts of the '80s) than now, but that doesn't mean just "let's go back to the '70s".  It might mean "let's make today as good as the '70s", as well as "let's remember the '70s fondly and learn from them".  I guess you could say a conservative is someone who can't see things that way.  (But as I've said elsewhere, it seems by now that they have learned; they just apply this attitude to Before-the-'60s rather than After-the-'60s.  I suppose you could say, though, that to the extent they want to improve the present, they insist on rooting those improvements in Before-the-'60s.)

    The '60s were simply an attempt to get the 21st Century started early....Well, what are we waiting for? There's no deadline on a dream!
