  •  Joe Scarborough is another reason... (0+ / 0-)

I think progressives bring pocket knives to gun fights.

DISCLAIMER*: I am not advocating a conspiracy theory here.  I am saying that if the tables were turned, the right would not hesitate to do this.

If Joe Scarborough was a liberal, we would hear every day that he killed his intern and there was a cover up (i.e. Chappaquiddick) and anything he says would be hounded based on that fact as opposed to substance.  If he were a liberal on fox news, he would be ridiculed as an extremist and a woman killer and would be marginalized at every turn.

Now, I am not suggesting we turn into what we hate about our opponent but we have to realize that we are fighting a war of public opinion where we impose limits of decency on ourselves and our opponents have no such limits.

Not only do mainstream supposed news organizations like Fox promote conspiracy theories about President Obama's birth certificate, gay prostitutes, connections with muslims and communist seeking to take over our country, etc..., so do elected republican congress people.  They are not saying these things in the shadows, starting dark rumors and whisper campaigns, they are saying it in campaign comercials, at debates and stump speeches all across the country and even on the floors of congress.

While we self regulate the things we say, for fear of sounding irrational or falsely accusing someone of somethng they may not have done, that is their standard operating procedure.  Take, for example the difference between 9/11 and Benghazi.  If we would have promoted the questions and put pressure on the Bush administration to answer those questions, it would have brought out a lot of crooked back deals for no-bid contracts, secret desires to go into Iraq before the 9/11 attacks and so on.  It may not have found any culpability at all for the attacks themselves but we may have gained some much needed support to prevent attacking Iraq.

Now compare that to Beghazi.  Absolutely nothing there but the republicans have pushed this issue to the point that people try to use the attack on the US embassy in Benghazi as a reason to impeach the president.  When I explain that there is no embassy in Benghazi and never was, they look at me like I'm stupid.  The Republicans have won the messaging war because we refuse to even talk among ourselves about things that may or may not be true if it sounds like it may be a tin-foil hat type allegation.

I do not know the answer to this.  I do not want to throw around lies to create unjustified anger to get votes for our side.  However, how do you continue to fight against an opponent who has no such limitation forcing you to spend all of your time on the defense against ridiculous claims while they are wearing you out in the war for public opinion.  We did not even do a good job disgracing David Vitter for his diaper wearing prostitute fettish while preaching his family values mantra.  We have to get tough and fight back.

If you are in a fight with a guy wearing glasses, you better lose that "won't hit a guy with glasses" moral code quick or he is going to kick the living shit out of you.
