My take: the POTUS genuinely wants a governing partner, he wants an actual opposition, not a party of monkey wrenchers.

I think he sees the crisis of governance in the legislative branch as a bigger problem than anything in the economy and he's really trying to find someone somehwere in the GOP who will be a partner.

That's not about friends, that's about what his true, deep beliefs about government, governance and the two party system are all about.

What I don't understand is why he refuses to acknowledge that the contemporary GOP is not a party interested in governance.

Yes, I think he has a vision, a guiding ideal, and he's trying to reach that. But he holds on to it so tightly he isn't properly assessing who is dealing with. If he were dealing with pre-Gingrich Republicans, c. 1980 Republicans, who at least felt some duty to nation above party, he'd be golden.

But these days ain't those days. I wish he'd abandon this naive idée fixe and we'd all be better off for it.

If Republicans said every 3rd person named "Smith" should hang, we'd bargain them to every 7th. Then we'll see apologia written praising this most pragmatic compromise. There's our losing formula.
