  •  And this to me is one of the key points: (11+ / 0-)
But long-term self-interest is almost certainly playing a bigger role in his decisions
It's clear he wants to cut Social Security and Medicare.  It's clear he wants a Grand Bargain.  Whether it's because that's where his politics really lie or because he wants to secure his place in history (which he already has for the obvious reason of being the first AA president, but presumably he wants to be known for more than that, which, if true, makes perfect sense to me) or both or something else there's no way to know.

For all his more fiery rhetoric in the last election...well, that was election mode.  It seems to me quite clear what he wants as the outcome and, assuming he actually isn't stupid, which he isn't, he's decided that this is the best way to get it.

So it seems stupid and destructive to us because we want a different outcome than he does.

      He hearts Wall Street.

He gave a speech before running for president stating his neoliberal, free market, Chicago school economics beliefs.

He is doing what he wants to do.

He doesn't care that it is destructive to the Democratic Party or Democratic Ideals.  He's married to the idea of cooperating with Republicans and to do that on a continual basis, you have to like Republicans more than you have Democratic Ideals.

End of story:  Corporate, neoliberal, free market, Chicago school "Democratic" president. Not stupid. Doesn't think he is destructive to his own goals from his point of view.  Doesn't care he is destructive to Democrats as a brand or per their Ideals.
