I broke my heart at an early age.  My parents  took me to see
Ingrid Bergman and Gary Cooper in "For Whom the Bell Tolls"
before I could read it.  I got Pilar's message about seismic orgasm early on.
    I liked it.
Then I read "Farewell to Arms" before I saw the film:
"I saw the nurse and Catherine's head on a pillow,  and she was all flat under the sheet.  The nurse put her finger to her lips, then stood up and came to the door."

I read it all before Bogart & Bacall.

"Islands in the Stream" & "Old Man & the Sea" not so much in either format.
