  •  My mother was into (18+ / 0-)

    fizzy stuff as a cure:

Ginger ale for serious intestinal problems (of which there were many in our household), coca cola if it was slightly less serious.

If you had a head ache, she'd give you a glass of sprite over ice, then make you drink ice water, all day long.

Any abrasion, mosquito bite, cut, scrape, lost limb was treated with hydrogen peroxide.  She always had an enormous gallon jug of it in the linen closet.

And baths filled with epsom salt.

But the most effective home remedy was the one from my grandmother, the tiny, teetotaling Baptist lady who used to make homemade cough syrup from moonshine and rock candy.  (The local sherrif would always bring her a mason jar of shine whenever they found a still.  One of the strangest social set-ups demonstrating something about life in small Southern towns that I've yet to figure out completely, but that's another matter altogether).

This stuff was guaranteed to make any grandchild with a cold INSTANTLY better, because it was so hideous.  Just

    N   A   S   T   Y
--with a capital N and the longest A you can get your vocal cords to produce--

One sniffle around my grandmother, she'd immediately say, "let me go get my cough medicine and I'll dose you" and we were the picture of radiant good health.  "Oh no, Mama J...I'm not sick, really, I feel fine!  I'm going outside to play now, see you later!" Said child would disappear.

That's a woman who knows how to doctor chilren... ;-)
