...of people to elevate themselves to positions of power, priviledge and authority over others.  Jesus, if you believe in his existence, was described as a man without a home who conversed with prostitutes, threw out the money changers, and commanded that the rich give all that they had to the poor.  But from that, we get expensive churches, flowing robes, gold chalices, and phrases like "His Grace" -- something that even Jesus himself was not described as being called.  I seem to remember something about "call no man your father upon the earth"...oops!!

I am an atheist ex-preacher's kid of all things, so I've been "in the kitchen", and I chuckle incessantly as christianity in particular, but also other religions, struggle to make their antiquated guide books such as the bible relevant and acceptable in the 21st century.  It doesn't help that the "divine" word of god was selected by a group of men centuries after the texts were written, so that any book that elevated women or diminished the existence of hell or punishment was conveniently deemed apocryphal.  The Apocalypse of St. Peter -- clearly not divine -- but Revelations -- totally divine, even though John had to be on acid when he wrote it.

Trying to apply the bible to today's world would be like trying to use ancient Greek and Roman medical texts to perform surgery.  Sure, you'll get some of it right, but a whole lot wrong, and I don't think most christians would be willing to go under the knife in such circumstances.

Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power -- Benito Mussolini

Unlike the self-annointed pastors we see in this country, one cannot elevate himself to the Magisterium of the Anglican Church, let alone its Primacy.  Others do it for you. ;)
