    My mother was a school teacher in the 1950s, and then (until the SCOTUS struck it down in something like 1974) you could not teach while visibly pregnant, and in some places not even while invisibly pregnant if anyone knew. It supposedly would corrupt young minds and make them ask inappropriate questions about s-e-x. She actually was pregnant with me for the last month or two of the school year but wasn't supposed to tell anyone. (I think she did tell her principal who kept the secret for her.) And she wanted more children after me and my sister, but had to go back to work and so couldn't have any more.
