    I just got laid off from my 2nd of 3 jobs. if I get another job or two between now and then, i'm in for the meet up.

    no worries- I got fired for doing something right. they weren't complying w/ a truckload of state and federal labor laws, including the paid sick leave law, and I got them to comply. they didn't even want to hang up the work place standards and wages posters- I told them if they didn't I was going to pursue it.

    they laid me off for "lack of work," so I can collect unemployment while I look for something else. it just happened last night, so i'm not looking yet.

    there's no way there's a genuine lack of work- a week ago they had a meeting telling us all we were in lock down on scheduling. no one is to miss a shift for any reason, including medical procedures or dr appointments. they need every driver. (total violation of the ct paid sick leave law to say that to an employee, let alone a room w/ over a hundred of your employees.)

    they conceded that you could attend a loved one's funeral.

    needless to say, I will be filing a complaint. I've never done that before in my life. i'm kind of looking forward to it. they're making it really easy for me.

    my factory job should start up again next week. it's part time, though. first we couldn't get the metal, then we didn't have the orders. I am fairly certain it's all severe weather events related- I don't work in the office yet so I don't have the details. fingers crossed though for things to start rolling again.

    anyway, I want to be in for the meetup, but i'm not sure. i'll know in a week or two. I may hold off on buying the ticket until the last minute.

    also, I got a new phone- w/ gps- so I won't orbit the meet up this time until after you all finish up and go on home- this time i'll find you.

      At least, I think I should be sorry that you lost your job, but you sound like you're busy morphing into the Northeast's answer to Norma Rae! I hope you'll be able to write about it at some point (not while in the middle of taking action, I realize that).

      What sort of work do you do, anyway? I'm blue collar, too, and I sometimes feel a bit odd talking about it here.

      I really hope that things improve for you. Keep in touch and let me know - we want you at the meetup!

        for my main job, work in the nursery at a church on sundays, and work part time in my friend's dad's factory for about 4 1/2 hours each day m-f. she and her husband got a grant from the state to expand their part of the factory (they lease space from her dad), and they plan to hire me full time at some point this year. as a condition of the grant and low interest loan they have to hire someone, and they wanted it to be me.

        in the meanwhile I work in her dad's part of the factory. mostly I work on a drill press. they're old machines, like from the forties and fifties. it's kind of like going back in time. my friend and her husband have modern machines which i'll probably never touch- they want me to work in their office.

        I got that job because I met the owners volunteering on campaigns. for a while they tried to get me to come work for them, but I was commuting so far it couldn't work. when I left my job and started working closer to home I was able to start working for them on my midday break. when I get hired by their company instead of her dad's, it will have to be full time. we were going to try and have me work some night and weekend hours so we could accommodate the bus driver job too, but now it looks like that's not going to be necessary! they don't have to start me now- to satisfy the state's requirements they just have to make sure they hire me before the end of the year.

        they're really nice- they love my kids and told me I could bring them w/ me whenever I need to. my friend grew up in her dad's factory, so she's kind of excited to have my kids around. she and her husband never had any.

        I was at the new bus co just since November- I didn't even notice the lack of posters. at every job they're always there, and you don't even really notice them- they just blend into the background. in January I looked around to see if there was anything new on the posters, then I realized there were no posters.

        also when I was hired my boss should have told me about the sick leave policy, but she didn't. I thought it would look bad to ask, so I said nothing. when I trained and rode w/ other drivers to learn their routes we'd talk and I found they didn't even know there was a paid sick leave law. or they knew it was a law but thought the bus co had been given a waiver from the state so they didn't have to comply.

        the law went into effect January 2012- they started to comply last month. just a few drivers know I was the trouble maker that made it happen.

        I thought they would try to find something I did wrong and fire me (I have a gps and cameras on my bus) but they surprised me and let me go for lack of work. I talked to a friend of mine yesterday who's a lawyer w/ the nlrb. he said I should stay friendly and keep making myself available for work there and wait for them to hire someone new instead of calling me back, then file a complaint.

        we'll see what happens.
