He didn't do a thing on that front unless pushed, or unless a bill he didn't fight for just happened to land on his desk.

    •  you kidding right? Fault Obama on anything else (31+ / 0-)

but gay rights? He is the most gay friendly president I have ever seen. Just FACTS! Most people on the right faults Obama's "coming out for marriage equality" for messing up "traditional marriage" and the high percentage of people supporting marriage equality now.

    •  This is absolutely not true (13+ / 0-)

He deliberately appointed people in the DOJ who have been working to end DOMA since he got into office. Those lawyers working at the DOJ deliberately crafted legal theory which was picked up by the lawyers working to end Prop 8.

He deliberately told the DOJ to stop defending DOMA a long time ago. He deliberately started the wheels turning on ending DADT.

What Obama has done has been absolutely brilliant. Rather than coming out on January 21, 2009 and saying he believed in gay rights, he has worked with people behind the scenes to craft legal language which will make DOMA unconstitutional. Rather than just signing an executive statement which would give people rights, running the risk of it being overturned when we get a president who does not believe in gay rights, he is instead playing the long game and got people to craft language activist lawyers working in each state for gay rights can use in the state and federal courts.

What Obama and others have done in the past four and a half years lines up exactly to how the Civil Rights Movement went. Most people don't realize how completely crafted the Civil Rights Movement was. A lot of events which looked completely spontaneous were actually very well thought out. A lot of the stuff said publicly, even stuff LBJ said, was based not so much on complete honesty but with the ultimate goal of moving racist white people towards believing black people should be treated equally.

As a straight women, I fervently hope that DOMA will be overturned in a few months. Oppression is fucking wrong. If it is overturned, I will not say Obama is the primary reason, as I know that so many have been involved in this movement. So many have bled and even died in this movement. The Civil Rights Movement did not achieve success because of LBJ. But he did help carry the baton over the finish line. I firmly believe that if DOMA is overturned in the next few years, then in fifty years Obama will be seen as the LBJ of the gay rights movement.
